The Bumper Jacksons are a big, fat party! Hot and sweet, their early jazz and country repertoire paints America’s story from New Orleans’ brothels to Appalachian hollers. Unafraid to scrap together new sounds from forgotten 78’s, the Bumper Jacksons boldly and elegantly balance paying homage to the traditions while fashioning their own unique, DIY style. They perform the old traditional sounds of America, heart-wrenching and youthful, and always in the spirit of raw adventure.

Bumper Jacksons strike like a band that’s leapt from a scratchy 78 and into an impromptu Mardi Gras jam. They’re all beads and beauty, this mighty uproar… Musically, Bumper Jacksons lead with early jazz, spiced with old country and contemporary approaches to lyrics … they embody the essence and import of roots gathered, fostered and allowed to thrive anew.  Such vibrancy illustrates within their latest album, last year’s “Sweet Mama, Sweet Daddy, Come In” … Pulled together as if by a rider who reins in a wild stallion, Bumper Jacksons’ music can quiet to a whisper. Unbridled, they can kick into a wail.”

About the exhibit: Real Women Who Work  is a collection of paintings (and drawings?) about women living within a world that may not recognize or value what they do every day. The paintings are of women in various stages of life and in various occupations. Children may be a focus too, as that is a huge part of my identity as a woman. My paintings will be scenes (Real and Surreal) as a response to false advertising. Ivanka’s “Women Who Work” is an ad campaign for a wealthy woman’s shoes, handbags and purses (Ivanka Trump Branding). “Women Who Work?” the painting, is exposing that ad campaign for the farce that it is. Painting the real women and their loved ones in the rest of my paintings is a genuine effort to champion women, not a false ad campaign for products.

About Nancy Polo: I am an artist, cook and mother who lives on an animal farm in Berryville, VA. I make delicious food from produce grown on local farms, as well as Smith Meadows meats and eggs. I am happy at work with other people dedicated to sustainably produced food. I am happiest, however, when I am painting. Art is an eloquent appeal from one being to whomever or whatever will respond. I have had a brush, pencil, or crayon in my hand since childhood. It always begins without knowing entirely what to say. As marks appear, a conversation fills the emptiness. My work varies to suit the dialogue that compels me most.
