Katie Quinnelly is a writer and homeschool English teacher living in Shepherdstown, WV. Her work has appeared in the Anthology of Appalachian Writers, Thin Air Magazine, Travelin’ Appalachian’s Revue, and Rabid Oak Literary Magazine, among others. Each class will focus on two or three of the primary elements of a story or other piece of creative work, including character, dialogue, conflict, plot, setting, and point-of-view. The two-hour session will start off with a stream-of-consciousness-style warm-up, then move into a discussion of the elements of interest for the day. Students will put the element to practice with an exercise from Lynda Barry’s book Syllabus and, if in need of a prompt, Po Bronson’s book, 642 Things to Write About, will be available. During the fifth and final class, students will have the opportunity to practice writing for a workshop or other specific audience, as well as reading aloud for an audience, in preparation for the culminated performance for the parents.
